Tunable Color Morphing with Cholesteric Liquid Crystal Films Embedded in PDMS

Cholesteric liquid crystal elastomers(CLCEs) have received notable interest due to their mechanochromic properties, which arise from their helical structure exhibiting Bragg reflection. In this study, mechanochromic panels were fabricated by embedding CLCE films at different thicknesses within a bulky Polydimethylsiloxane(PDMS) substrate. The stress distribution through the thickness of the PDMS bulk varies depending on the degree and types of deformation, resulting in different mechanochromic colors for CLCE films embedded at different heights. For example, when the PDMS is bent in the out-of-plane direction, the inner part experiences compression, while the outer part undergoes strain, and the center of the PDMS remains stress-free. Through investigations of the mechanochromic color distribution in response to compression, stretching, and twisting stimuli, we successfully demonstrated the potential of these CLCEs in mechanochromic display devices capable of camouflage and signaling.
