The ionic asymmetric azobenzene-based monomer (i-AAM) was newly designed, selectively uniaxially oriented and successfully polymerized for the fabrication of ionic conductivity switchable smart skins. Depending on the polymerization method, i-AAM LCE can be used as dual-responsive actuators or ionic skins. The uniaxially oriented monodomain LCE can be contracted by heating above TNI as well as bent upon UV light irradiation. The ionic conductivity of the randomly oriented polydomain LCE can be switched by heat, light and external stresses. Using the difference of resistance and ionic conductivity by mechanical deformations, i-AAM LCE can be used as smart ionic skins to detect surroundings and multiple motions. The multi-responsive i-AAM LCE actuators and smart ionic skins can be applied for the development of advanced soft robots. This work was supported by Mid-Career Researcher Program (2021R1A2C2009423).
