Synthesis and Properties of Spirobisindane-based Low Dielectric Polyimide for Application of High-Frequency Band Communications

With the development of 5G communication, the demand for high-frequency band communications is increasing. However, traditional fully aromatic polyimide (PI), which is used as an insulating material for electric and electronics, has a high dielectric constant (Dk) due to its structural features so it is challenging to apply it to next-generation insulation materials owing to their inherent characteristics. The inclusion of spirobisindane (SBI) moiety which has contorted structure imparts high free volume and microporosity. Thus, these reduce Dk efficiently. In this study, novel SBI-based diamines were synthesized by introducing N-substituted maleimide into diamine to improve mechanical and thermal properties. Furthermore, PI were polymerized using SBI-based diamines with several dianhydrides and characterized using various analytical methods such as NMR, FT-IR, GPC, DSC and TGA.
