Disposal of pharmaceutical wastes into sewers or landfills can negatively impact the environment and human health, such as ecological disruption and the emergence of super bacteria due to antibiotic resistance. To solve these problems, research on the removal of pharmaceutical waste in rivers has been conducted. However, it has been limited to requiring complex separation processes. In this study, pollutant drug carrier (PDC) molecules based on 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) polymer were synthesized via EDC coupling, and then the polymer absorbent was produced with cellulose. PDC can selectively capture the target drugs by utilizing non-covalent binding between the drug and PDC molecules. Furthermore, a system for detecting pharmaceutical waste was constructed.
