Analysis of tensile properties depending on temperature of TPU substrate film for flexible display application

In this study, tensile properties of thermosetting polyurethane (TPU) films according to temperature were analyzed. TPU is promising flexible substrate materials for flexible displays form factors. Foldable smartphones with ultra-thin glass cover windows are being commercialized. However, many foldable users report sudden cracking issue in the UTG cover window when exposed to low or high temperature differences. Therefore, a substrate based on a polymer material showing excellent reliability in a wide temperature range is required. A simple tensile test and a cyclic hysteresis test were performed using a tensile tester with a temperature controlled chamber. While temperature in the chamber varying from -40 ℃ to 100 ℃, the tensile strength, hysteresis, and elastic recovery characteristics of the TPU film were measured. Through this study, we believe that we can accurately predict reliability for durability as well as real-world performance in widely ranged temperature environment.
