 Hierarchical Kenaf Fibrous Preforms for Biodegradable Composite Applications

In recent times, the rise in awareness about environmental issues caused by plastics and the growing emphasis on improving energy efficiency, particularly in the automotive sector, has led to heightened interest in fiber-reinforced plastics (FRPs). These FRPs, known for their high strength, lightweight, and recyclability, have garnered significant attention as a viable alternative in various industries, gradually replacing steel and thermosetting resins. However, the application of natural fiber-reinforced plastics comes with certain drawbacks, such as weak adhesion among the natural fibers themselves, resulting in poor properties of the final fiber-reinforced plastics. In this study, kenaf fiber (KF) nonwoven preform was prepared and applied as a reinforcing agent for improving the mechanical properties of biodegradable polybutylene succinate (PBS). Mechanical strength, chemical properties, and moisture stability of the prepared PBS-natural fiber reinforced plastic were evaluated.
