Characteristics and Antioxidant Durability of LBL Coated Contact Lenses Based on Seaweed Polysaccharides

Changes in physical properties and antioxidant persistence were examined by coating seaweed polysaccharides on contact lenses polymerized at room temperature. Lutein was used as an antioxidant, and layer by layer(LBL) coating was performed with polysaccharides such as alginate and carrageenan after activating the surface of the contact lens. To evaluate the performance of contact lenses, various physical properties, surface analysis, and antioxidant duration were measured. Physical properties such as water contents, wettability, and oxygen transmissibility were improved with the LBL coating of the contact lens. The surface coating of contact lenses by seaweed polysaccharides extended the elution duration of lutein, and the antioxidant duration was further increased by the added metal ions. It was confirmed that the seaweed polysaccharide-based LBL-coated contact lens improved physical properties and extended antioxidant duration.
