Processing Porous Structures in Liquid Crystal Elastomers

Liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs) are an emerging class of stimuli-responsive smart polymers based on unique properties including programmable molecular orientation and reversible large-strain shape changes. So far, the processing of porous structures in LCEs has been rarely reported except for a few examples in biomedical scaffolds. As the porous structured LCEs can have more potential in many industrial applications, here we discuss several strategies to create structured microscale pores in LCEs for a wide range of open opportunities in practical applications.
