The rapid increase in plastic products and subsequent waste became harm the ecosystem. Technologies to solve this problem need to be developed. Nature hints to utilize biomass, but these often compete with food production. This study uses non-edible waste, pectin extracted from discarded onion peels, to synthesize bioplastics. Pure pectin dissolves easily in water due to their negative charge(COO- functional group). So, we combined pectin with positively charged(NH3+ functional group) chitosan to create ionic bonds, followed by the covalent bond formation, which resulted in insoluble biomaterials. We verified the formation using biophysical techniques including 13C ssNMR spectroscopy and microscopy. The successful creation of sustainable bioplastics from recycled biowaste offers a novel substitute for non-recycled synthetic plastics.
