Pore preservation of silica aerogel-incorporated polymer films using a control strategy of polypropylene chain length

Silica aerogel is known as the most excellent insulating material, which is chemically composed of silica of flame-retardant characteristics, and physically known as a solid including a three-dimensional nanopores. Thus, the silica aerogel can indicate excellent properties as sound absorbent and impact-resistant material. However, due to its weak mechanical properties, it may be challenging to use it as a single material. When silica aerogel is incorporated into polymer, the matrix can impregnate the pores, which negates the benefits of silica aerogel. Therefore, a manufacturing strategy for silica aerogel composites that preserves the porous structure is required. In this study, we controlled the flowability of the matrix through polymer chain control and investigated the preservation of porous structure, as well as various application characteristics of the manufactured composite.
