Coal ash-based conductive polymer composite for carbon neutrality

About 8 million tons of coal ash, a by-product of coal-fired power plants, is emitted annually. Coal ash is recycled as an alternative raw material for cement and concrete, but a significant amount, approximately 2.5 million tons in 2021, is being landfilled. Therefore, alternatives to coal ash recycling are required to cope with the increasing generation amount of coal ash and insufficient landfills. In this study, a conductive polymer composite was fabricated by mixing coal ash with chain-severed polypropylene, and it was used for applications requiring conductivity. The proposed strategy achieves coal ash recycling, and, at the same time, expands the coal ash recycling method by meeting the demand for conductive materials in practical industries.
