Bioactive Polymeric Adhesives Releasing Zinc Ions for Enhanced Wound Management

Polymeric adhesives have attracted attention as promising materials for wound management and tissue regeneration. Recently, researchers have endeavored to develop bioactive adhesives to improve wound healing with strong adhesiveness. It is demonstrated that zinc ions (Zn2+) play critical roles in wound healing and tissue regeneration. In this study, we report Zn2+-releasing tissue adhesives via zinc peroxide-mediated crosslinking reaction for enhanced wound management. Our hydrogels show controllable physicochemical properties depending on the composition. In addition, bioactive adhesives release Zn2+ in a sustained manner with excellent cyto- and tissue compatibility. Furthermore, our adhesive hydrogels facilitate wound healing with strong tissue adhesiveness, hemostatic effect, and immunomodulation. We suggest that our Zn2+-releasing adhesive hydrogels have great potential as advanced tissue adhesives for wound management.
