The traditional batch production process for maleic anhydride co-polymer (MAh coP) from maleic anhydride (MAh) and terminal alkene is high temperature and poses serious safety risks. Herein we report a continuous flow process for the synthesis of maleic anhydride co-polymer (MAhcoP). The continuous flow technology provided 92% yield in a very short residence time of 100 min. The reported process had a higher batch cycle time of 4 to 12 h. In addition, we used benzoyl peroxide (BPO) as a radical initiator, ethyl acetate (EA) found as a suitable solvent for vinyl polymerization under high temperature (105 ℃) and using a PTFE loop reactor. The optimized vinyl polymerization conditions were applied on a series of alkene such as diisobutylene (DIB), styrene, cyclohexene and maleic anhydride (MAh). The current flow technology has potential for industrial-scale production of vinyl polymerization and its use as a compatibilizer.
