Design of PEO-containing Polyimide as the Protection Layer for Aqueous Zinc-ion Battery with Enhanced Cycling Performance

Aqueous zinc-ion battery is being actively studied as a next-generation secondary battery, and they can be expected to have specific capacity, safety, and cost-efficiency. However, the Zn metal anode suffers poor reversibility and cycling stability due to the side reactions such as dendrite formation and surface corrosion. In this study, we designed a PEO unit containing coating polyimide as the protecting layer for the zinc metal anode to enhance the cycle stability of the zinc-ion battery. The designed polymer with numerous polar sites such as carbonyl and ether groups facilitates Zn2+ ion diffusion to ensure uniform deposition. The random nucleation on the anode is suppressed by preventing random ion deposition, resulting in enhanced cycling performance of the zinc-ion battery. The performance variation depends on the aromatic moiety in the polyimide also discuss to address a design factor for the high-performance protection layer.
