Stimuli-induced Optical Sensors Consisting of 2D Nanostructure Fluorescent Films

To manufacture organic fluorescent sensors that respond to acid vapor, a cyanostilbene-based reactive monomer with pyridine moiety (PRM) was newly designed and synthesized. The synthesized PRM showed aggregation-induced emission properties and reversibly responded to acid/base. Furthermore, PRMs can act as H-boned acceptors. As a result, the PRM-8OB complex was formed by 1:1 hydrogen bonding. Because the complexed PRM-8OBs were a similar shape to a rod-like liquid crystal, they can have a smectic mesophase. From the optimized mixture, two-dimensional (2D) nanostructure films were fabricated through subsequent processes such as self-assembly, photopolymerization, and etching. Interestingly, it was identified that 2D nanostructure sensing films had different sensitivities to acid vapor depending on the molecular direction. We demonstrated a new optical sensor that can appear the risk level according to the concentration of acid vapor in the air.
