The block copolymer electrolytes are the one of widely studied materials due to their potential application to ionic exchange membranes and organic electronics. In this report, poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate-block-ethyl vinyl ketone) (PSS-b-PEVK) was prepared by chain extension of ethyl vinyl ketone from poly(ethyl p-styrenesulfonate) (PESS) via reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization. The block copolymerization was found to proceed in a controlled manner. Efficient deprotection of the ethyl group in PESS block was conducted in the presence of triethylamine as a base. The product was characterized using SEC, 1H NMR, and DSC. This strategy allowed facile synthesis of well-defined PSS-b-PEVK.
