Antibacterial PVDF-based Films Melt-blended with Twin Screw Extruder

Bacterial growth on polymer surfaces negatively affects biomedical devices, reducing their functionality and lifespan, and harming human health. To address these issues, it is essential to impart antibacterial properties to polymers. In this regard, antibacterial polymers grafted with cationic groups have received significant attention. In particular, we grafted pyridinium groups onto poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) and successfully synthesized a cationic antibacterial polymer, Pyd-PVDF. However, the Pyd-PVDF is too brittle to be fabricated into the antibacterial polymer films. To prepare antibacterial flexible Pyd-PVDF/polyamide (PA) blends, thus, through a twin-screw extruder we melt-blended the Pyd-PVDF with PA, which is thermally and mechanically superior, biocompatible as well as widely used in biomedical applications. Along with the mechanical and thermal properties of the prepared Pyd-PVDF/PA blends, their compatibility and antibacterial properties were thoroughly evaluated according to the contents of Pyd-PVDF.
