Hydrogel thin films are recently receiving great attention for specific applications in biomedical, wearable electronics, and solar control. Preparation of thin films typically involves spreading the pre-gel solution containing vinyl monomers and crosslinkers onto a substrate and followed by the crosslinking reaction via free radical polymerization. The presence of oxygen can greatly affect polymerization, hence degassing process and nitrogen atmosphere are highly required for the propagation of the reaction. In this presentation, we utilize the unique oxygen tolerance of photoinduced electron/energy transfer reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (PET-RAFT) polymerization to prepare hydrogels in open-air conditions. Complete polymerization is observed in 25 mins and the oxygen has a negligible influence on the internal structure of the hydrogels. As a demonstration of the developed method, large-area hydrogel films could be fabricated by PET-RAFT.
