Extensive research has been conducted on polymers containing different tethered acid moieties, which find diverse applications. To enhance the functionality of these polymers, different strategies have been attempted to modify the local concentration of acid groups and manipulate the chain structures. Nevertheless, achieving controlled synthesis of sulfonic acid polymers, especially at high acid concentrations, poses challenges due to dis-solubility, uncontrollable side reactions and uncertainty regarding substitution positions. Here, we synthesized a range of acid polymers with precisely controlled positions of tethered acid moieties through RAFT polymerization. These polymers incorporated functional groups spanning from nonpolar to ionic, providing the ability to adjust intermolecular interactions at molecular level. We examined the morphology, chain structure and ion clustering behavior of the resulting polymers, with a focus on their potential applications in electrochemical and electromechanical devices.
