To control the light effectively in electronics, we newly designed and synthesized diacetylene (DA)-based amphiphiles. For the fabrication of coatable polarizer film, the DA amphiphiles were mixed with a 4,6-decadiyne. Because a lyotropic liquid crystal phase can be formed with the help of 4,6-decadiyne, not only a coating process was possible but also anisotropic optical properties have been amplified. The polarizer thin film was obtained by coating and topochemical polymerization process. Through structural and morphological analyses, it was confirmed that the molecular long axis of DA amphiphiles was aligned perpendicular to a shear direction (SD), whereas the imidazolium group and polydiacetylene backbone were oriented along the SD. Therefore, the DA-based coatable polarizer exhibited a high degree of polarization, which can be applied in flexible displays.
