Ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene(UPE) films were modified with ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid(EDTA) using 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane(APTES) as a crosslinking layer. APTES layer was obtained by the simple silanization process with photoacid generator(PAG) which leads to the improved control of the silane particle size by optimizing the pH of solution. EDTA were then introduced onto APTES layer to enhance the adsorption capacity for metal ions. EDTA were found to be an ideal structure for forming stable chelates with metal ions as well as offering a more hydrophilic properties. Water contact angle(WCA) was observed to analyze the hydrophilicity of EDTA-silane modified UPE films. The morphologies of the films were characterized by SEM, and the surface element components were examined with EDS and XPS. The removal efficiency of metal ions was taken as the difference between the initial and final concentrations of Cu(II) in the solutions after stirring with the modified UPE film.
