Effect of Asymmetry on Supramolecular Symmetry Breaking with Achiral Conjugated Molecules

Symmetry breaking is increasingly important in the design of organic conjugated materials due to the great potential for novel optical and magnetic properties. External stimuli can induce supramolecular chirality in initially achiral molecules by favoring asymmetric molecular packing. Therefore, adjusting the symmetry of the achiral molecule can control its chirality by influencing molecular packing. However, research has predominantly focused on symmetric achiral molecules, leaving a lack of investigation on asymmetric achiral molecules. In this study, we synthesized quinoidal-based conjugated molecules with varying numbers of substituting fluorine (F) atoms, F0, F1, and F2. By interacting with chiral solvents or chiral dopants, the high planarity of quinoid structures expects to promote chiral packing via π -π stacking. The molecules are anticipated to exhibit distinct supramolecular chirality depending on their symmetry and the number of F atoms.
