Toward the Equilibrium: Stability of Initial Solvent-Driven Non-Equilibrium Effect on Polymer Nanocomposites

In polymer nanocomposites (PNCs), polymers are adsorbed on particles, and adsorbed polymers can affect the structure and properties of PNCs. To control adsorbed polymers, many studies have changed the parameters such as size/shape/chemistry of particles/polymers. The investigation of these parameters assumed that PNCs are in equilibrium states. However, recent studies have shown that the processing condition can affect the final states of PNC, which are induced by the non-equilibrium state of adsorbed polymers.
Our previous study reported that the degree of physical adsorption of polymers in PNC can be affected by casting solvent, inducing a non-equilibrium effect on the properties of PNCs. In this work, we investigate the stability of the casting solvent-driven non-equilibrium effect on PNCs by redispersing PNCs with different solvents. We found that adsorbed polymers in a non-equilibrium state may not reach their equilibrium conformation despite multiple redispersing processes.
