Cell Formation and Mechanical Properties for the Blowing Agent Content and Molding Conditions in Foam Injection Molding Using Chemical Blowing Agent

Shaping that allows the cells to be formed is utilized to reduce the weight of polymer materials. In this study, foam injection molding was performed using ABS resin and a chemical blowing agent. Cell formation and weight reduction according to the blowing agent content and molding conditions were investigated. In addition, variations in mechanical properties according to cell formation were observed. As the chemical blowing agent content varies from 0.0 wt% to 1.0, 2.0, and 3.0 wt%, the density of the cell increased and the weight decreased by up to 7.5%. This relationship was depending on the molding conditions. The tensile strength and modulus of elasticity of the foam injection molded specimens decreased by 10.4% and 7.4%, respectively, when the content of the chemical blow agent increased to 3.0 wt%. Overall, as the content of the chemical blow agent increased, the weight decreased and the mechanical properties tended to decrease.
