Despite having good thermal properties and chemical resistance, fluoropolymers are challenging to be employed in industries due to their poor processability. These limitations can be overcome by incorporating post-crosslinkable properties. Among fluoropolymers, poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-chlorotrifluoroethylene)(P(VDF-CTFE)) enables synthesis of grafted polymers due to the presence of Cl atoms. Through subsequent reactions of these grafted polymers, it is possible to achieve post-crosslinkable properties. For achieving such properties, atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) is an effective method, making it easy grafting monomers.
In this study, P(VDF-CTFE)-g-GMA was synthesized through graft polymerization of glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) by ATRP, endowing it with post-crosslinked properties. Subsequently, by subjecting P(VDF-CTFE)-g-GMA to UV light exposure with photo-initiator for crosslinking, the confirmation of its post-crosslinkable property was achieved.
