The thermal instability of PVC makes recycling difficult due to property deterioration and the generation of toxins through thermal degradation. We reported a green PVC upcycling that involves grafting monomers onto recycled PVC (rPVC) to increase its value. rPVC was obtained from the tarpaulin through a low-energy process at room temperature. A rPVC-g-PMMA copolymer was synthesized by using extracted PVC and methyl methacrylate via supplemental activator and reducing agent atom transfer radical polymerization (SARA ATRP). The careful solvent selection during the extraction and polymerization made the overall upcycling process green. This greener ATRP has been reported to use ppm-level catalysts. The thermal improvement of rPVC-g-PMMA was confirmed through DSC and Vicat tests. The upcycling strategy through grafting various vinyl monomers demonstrated broad applications.
