Proton exchange membranes have a problem of concern about performance degradation due to mechanical damage from membrane swelling during fuel cell operation. Therefore, proton exchange membranes that can heal mechanical damage to restore their original function are important for the fabrication of durable and reliable proton exchange membrane fuel cells. The membrane made by combining hydrocarbon-based sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) and poly(vinyl alcohol) with tannic acid that helps self-healing provides enhanced membrane stability and prevents mechanical damage. The self-healed membranes exhibits more reliable proton conduction with the enhanced mechanical stability, giving rise to realizing a durable operation of the fuel cell.
