For addressing the urgent issue of global warming and the need for clean energy sources, green hydrogen has emerged as a focal point for replacing fossil fuels in future energy due to its pollution-free production. One promising method is water splitting using a photocatalyst. Organic semiconductors can generate holes and electrons when absorbing light, enabling them to participate in the redox reaction of water. In this presentation, we have developed new Y-series acceptors, namely YJ2Cl and YJ2F, which function as photocatalysts. By introducing oligo-ethylene glycol (OEG) side chains into the core and eliminating the outer alkyl chain, these acceptors exhibit distinct properties compared to Y6. The incorporation of OEG chains and the absence of normal alkyl chains result in increased hydrophilicity, enabling the adsorption of water molecules for enhanced hydrogen generation. These findings provide valuable insights into the development of organic semiconductor-based photocatalysts.
