Amphiphilic Fullerene Nanosurfactant for Automatic Molecular Alignments

To induce the automatic alignment of liquid crystal (LC) molecules in the optoelectronic devices, the amphiphilic fullerene nanosurfactant (AFNS) was synthesized. The addition of AFNS resulted in the automatic construction of vertical alignment (VA) layer of LC molecules. The automatic construction of VA layers is related to the controlled compatibility between AFNS and host LC molecules as well as to the optimized concentration of AFNS in the host LC. In order to confirm the electro-optical switching properties, a multidomain LC cell with a patterned pixel electrode was fabricated. The transmittance of LC cell can be reversibly controlled by applying a voltage. The system that can automatically induce the VA of LC molecules and switch the transmittance with low driving voltage can be used to LC display fields.
