Development of Highly Efficient Deep-Blue Phosphorescent Organic Light-Emitting Diodes using Carbene-based Iridium Complexes

Deep-blue triplet emitters remain far inferior to standard red and green triplet emitters in terms of exhibiting high color purities Commission International de l'Éclairage (CIE y values of ≤ 0.1), external quantum efficiencies (EQEs) and high electroluminescent brightnesses in phosphorescent organic light-emitting diodes (PHOLEDs). In fact, no deep-blue triplet emitter with color purity and high device performance has been previously reported. In this study, we developed high-efficiency deep-blue PHOLEDs using high doping technic and novel carbene-based Ir(III) complexes, which meets the requirements of the National Television System Committee (NTSC) CIE (x, y) coordinates with an extremely high EQE and high brightness despite of high emitter concentration. Moreover, solution-proceesed deep-blue PHOLEDs were developed, which indicate high EQEmax of 25.3% and CIE(x, y) coordinates of (0.156, 0.102). This is the first report of high performance, deep-blue phosphor, carbene-based Ir(III) complex device with outstanding CIE(x, y) color coordinates and a high EQE.
