Solvent drying-induced anisotropic crack formation on DNA liquid crystal film

Crack is a controllable phenomenon with potential applications as a strain sensor and microchannel template. Drying-induced crack formation allows for easy creation without special tools or equipment. DNA has an abundance of negative charges, and controllable orientation in the lyotropic liquid crystal phase. This enables controllable swell shrinkage, making DNA an attractive material for use in drying-induced cracks.
This study explores controlled crack generation in oriented DNA films by fabricating crack morphology through solution concentration, film manufacturing method, and contact line shape. Dehydration reactions induced by tetrahydrofuran(THF) lead to the creation of parallel cracks aligned with the DNA chain's long axis. These aligned pathways present diverse opportunities, such as templates for liquid crystals and nanoparticles.
