As environmental problems become more serious, interest in biodegradable materials to replace plastics is increasing. Polyethylene (PE) is widely used for agricultural or food packaging films. However, PE film is often difficult to recycle, such as when it is mixed with pollutants or waste. Therefore, Polybutylene adipate-co-terephthalate (PBAT) is chosen to replace PE. PBAT has the advantage of biodegradability in the soil in addition to flexibility and processability similar to PE. However, its lower mechanical strength limits its applications. cellulose nanofiber (CNF) would be a candidate for reinforcing PBAT due to the excellent mechanical property. In this study, composites were prepared by mixing PBAT with CNF. Because CNF aggregates by capillary force between them when drying, nano-sized silica particles were synthesized on the surface of cellulose fibers to reduce aggregation. The mechanical and rheological properties of the silica-modified CNF/PBAT composite were analyzed.
