Molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) are synthetic materials for recognizing specific molecules. MIPs have complementary cavities in regard to chemical properties of template molecules. Compared to natural bioreceptors like antibodies, aptamers, or DNA, MIP-based sensors for detecting proteins can be an attractive choice with advantages such as simple fabrication process, low cost, good chemical stability, and repeatability to use. However, there are unavoidable issues in protein imprinting: denaturation in organic conditions and formation of cavities with many functional groups resulting in low selectivity for target proteins. An antigenic determinant has been investigated as an alternative template molecule without limitations when using proteins. In this study, a C-terminus fragment of IL-1α is used as an antigenic determinant to fabricate MIP films. The nano-sized stripe-patterned gold electrodes were used for enhancing the sensitivity of the electrochemical sensing system.
