In this study, we present spike Janus particles that simultaneously block UV while offering enhanced emulsion stability. These particles consist of multiple SiO2 spikes which are grown on a spherical TiO2 core with a thin SiO2 shell using sol-gel method. The incorporation of TiO2 in the core was shown to effectively block UV due to high refractive index while the presence of the SiO2 shell suppresses the photocatalytic activity. By utilizing wax colloidosomes as templates, these spike nanoparticles were modified to exhibit Janus characteristics. This leads to strong and irreversible adsorption of Janus particles on the oil/water (O/W) interface where the spike nature of the particle additionally contributes to interfacial stabilization by steric effect. As these particles offer UV blocking and high emulsion stability, we envision that these particles would have great potential in cosmetic applications which demand better sunscreen and skincare formulations.
