The demand for lithium secondary batteries is rapidly increasing, with most commercially available batteries utilizing liquid-based electrolytes. While these electrolytes offer high ion conductivity, their stability is a concern. To address this, researchers are developing polymer or solid electrolytes with lower ion conductivity due to interfacial resistance but enhanced thermal stability. Incorporating sulfur enables the creation of electrolytes with improved ion conductivity and superior thermal stability. Comparing polyethylene oxide (PEO) and polyether sulfone (PES), commonly used electrolytes, PEO restricts the movement of lithium cations due to its smaller oxygen atom size, potentially resulting in higher ion conductivity. The addition of sulfur allows for the pursuit of both high ion conductivity and thermal stability simultaneously. Overcoming sulfur's low solubility with lithium can be achieved by utilizing a suitable solvent.
