Photobiomodulation using near-infrared light is widely used for the non-invasive treatment of various ocular diseases. NIR light activated the photoreceptor of mitochondria and increases the therapeutic effect by accelerating the production growth factors and cell proliferation. In this study, we fabricated NIR light-emitting contact lens for the treatment of diabetic retinopathy. A NIR light-emitting micro-LED was integrated with a coil and integrated-circuit chip; this chip was successfully embedded in a contact lens. Retina vascular hyper-permeability induced by diabetic retinopathy was inhibited by wearing NIR LED contact lens and the therapeutic effect was observed in in vivo and in vitro test. The approach of ocular disease treatment using NIR LEDcontact lens makes it possible to perform the treatment of diabetic retinopathy in real-time, thereby improving the convenience of the user. Moreover, this technology has the potential to be applied to various fields such as contact lens display, and fNIR.
