Polyimide(PI) foams from high internal phase emulsion (HIPE) are used for efficient mass transport through a highly porous and bicontinuous pore structure. However, their structure is usually fabricated via expensive processes such as supercritical drying or freeze drying. Also, residual surfactant causes a decrease in the physical properties of the resulting porous polymer. In this study, we propose the use of bismaleimide oligomer as a surfactant for the water-in-oil HIPE. The bismaleimide with a branched aliphatic unit successfully stabilizes the interface and undergoes chemical cross-linking at the external phase to fix the continuous morphology. The resulting PI foam with porosity > 80 % and micrometer-sized pores was obtained by simply washing the internal phase and drying it under a vacuum. We also confirmed that the cross-linked PI foam has excellent thermal and mechanical properties, which is sufficient to be applied in the field of separation, and battery separator.
