Liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs) are unique materials with anisotropic and stimuli-responsive properties, making them highly promising for applications in soft robotics.
To achieve multi-directional locomotion in LCE actuators, additional steps like employing a multi-layer system or chemical coating are often required. However, as these systems have limitation like exfoliation and slow-response, developing monolithic LCE capable of multi-locomotion is a critical objective in this field. Here, by introducing an azo group to an LCE film, we demonstrate the realization of heat-light dual stimuli-responsive properties in a monolithic LCE film. In this study, we present a dual-stimuli responsive monolithic LCE film exhibiting multi-directional motion in response to heat and UV-light stimuli. Exploiting these heat-light responsive properties, we successfully generate various shapes, achieve accelerated actuation, and showcase motion-locking capabilities in LCE film.
