Electrochemical water splitting is one of the promising methods for hydrogen production as renewable energy resources. Pt has been widely used as electrocatalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in water splitting, but activity and stability still need to be improved. In this study, Au-Pt bimetallic nanocomposite electrodes for HER are prepared by ligand exchange-assisted Layer-by-Layer (LbL) assembly. Pt and Au nanoparticles are alternately deposited onto the substrates paired with short alkyl amines via ligand exchange processes. The Au-Pt LbL nanocomposite films exhibit HER overpotentials about 2 times lower than only Pt LbL nanoparticle films despite the lower Pt contents. Higher activity can be attributed to the synergistic effect of the high electrical conductivity, electrochemical surface area, and bimetallic heterostructures. This approach can be utilized for large-area preparation of multicomponent catalysts from various electrochemical reactions.
