The pyridine-containing polyacetylene polyelectrolytes have been used as candidate materials for light-emitting devices, cationic poly(2-ethynylpyridinium chloride)-silica nanohybrids, nanocomposite films via electrostatic layer-by layer assembly, unipolar write-once-read-many-times (WORM) memory devices, quaternized poly(pyridylacetylene)-silver nanocomposites, etc. Here, we report on the synthesis of a new polyacetylene polyelectrolyte with the N-(4-pentynyl)-2-ethynylpyridinium iodidede substituents by the activated polymerization of 2-ethynylpyridine using 5-iodo-1-pentyne in high yield. The multiple peaks of iodine atom in EDX analysis means that the iodide ion has different form and/or different environments. As a result of X-ray diffraction analysis, it was found that the polymers are mostly amorphous. The electrochemical and electro-optical properties were measured and discussed.
