Conventional fabrication methods to synthesize cosmetic particles typically require a multistep and tedious process including stirring, washing, and drying processes. In this study, we propose a simple and effective strategy to prepare functional and uniform cosmetic particles from colloidal and sol precursors in a short time using an eco-friendly spray drying process. This fabrication approach allows us to control the size distribution and surface morphology of functional cosmetic particles including silica, calcium carbonate, and nano-cellulose in various ways. The resulting morphology-controlled cosmetic particles afforded excellent water repellency, and simultaneously provided intriguing optical properties including soft-focus and near-infrared-blocking effects. Our controlled approach opens a new way to fabricate functional cosmetic particles with a wide range of potential applications in water-repellent, skin reflection control, and IR blocking materials.
