Polystyrene Biodegradation by Mesophilic Bacteria Isolated from Common Soil

Polystyrene (PS) is widely used in various industries due to its unique properties. However, its hydrophobic nature makes it challenging to biodegrade naturally, hindering oxidative and hydrolysis. In this study, we investigated the potential of mesophilic bacteria from common soil to degrade PS. Two new strains, Pseudomonas lini JNU01 and Acinetobacter johnsonii JNU01, were obtained and identified. PS was the sole carbon source, and the growth environment was a non-carbonaceous nutrient medium. We used Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) to identify hydroxyl groups and novel chemical bonds. Additionally, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) showed the development of defective pores on the external surface of the PS, indicating degradation. Moreover, contact angle measurements revealed an increased hydrophilic surface, suggesting PS film biodegradation. These results provide evidence that PS can be effectively degraded by bacteria found in common soil.
