Thermo-Responsive Self-Healing and Spooling Behavior of Liquid-Crystalline Thermoplastic Polyurethane via Disulfide Metathesis

Self-healing polyurethane has the ability to autonomously recover its original functions after any physical damage. The presence of mesogenic units within the polyurethane gives rise to its liquid-crystalline characteristics. In this study, we synthesized the heat-responsive self-healing liquid-crystalline polyurethane (LCPU) through the condensation of a mesogenic diol with a diisocyanate having disulfide metathesis. The liquid crystal phase of the synthesized LCPU was observed through a polarization microscope and thermal analysis. In addition, the self-healing properties were confirmed by conducting a heating test on damaged PU specimens, which were restored to their original shape after being heated. The microfibers of the LCPU, created using wet spinning, exhibited the spooling effect by consistently winding into a 20μm diameter silicon oil droplet. This self-healing LCPU can find extensive applications in areas such as electronic materials, films, and smart textiles.
