Here, we create a Polyurea/PEG dual-shelled microcapsule for the long-term retention of small molecules with high volatility. We use a double emulsion-based microfluidic approach to encapsulate the volatile small molecules within a hydrogel shell, followed by reinforcement with a polyurea membrane through interfacial polymerization. The polyurea shell formed within the hydrogel shell effectively acts as a diffusion barrier, enabling the encapsulation of various small molecules. We further enhances the retention time of the encapsulated small molecules despite very thin shell thickness through an in-depth study of various composition ratios and types of amines and isocyanates for polyurea shells. The proposed microcapsule system exhibits excellent durability by preventing leakage of volatile oil, even in its dry state and when exposed to high concentrations of anionic surfactants.
