The molecular weight of polymer is the most important factor that determines the various physical properties, such as the modulus, solubility, crystallinity, and melting temperature. Many studies have reported that high molecular weight of polymer improves device performance. However, the effects of molecular weight have not been widely explored in gas sensing characteristics. In this study, we investigated the influence of poly(3-hexylthiophene)(P3HT) molecular weight on the mechanical properties and gas sensing performances for various gases(NO2, SO2, CO2). We fabricated two types of thin films using different solvents; an amorphous film using CF and a crystalline film using DCB. In this study, we observed that in the amorphous film, small molecular weight of P3HT improved the mechanical flexibility and gas sensing properties due to large free volume induced by defects such as chain end. On the other hand, in the crystalline film, gas sensing properties showed an opposite trend.
