Due to the extremely low mechanical strength of gallium-based liquid metals at room temperature, the liquid metals offer an ideal match with the soft nature of polymers. Here we developed various polymer/liquid metal composites with the aim of opening next-generation flexible and stretchable electronics, showing impressive electrochemical performance. For flexible electronics, a 1D microwire was employed, featuring a liquid metal/polymer core/shell structure. The exposed liquid metal at the tip of the microwire served as a neural electrode, facilitating communication with neurons in the brain. For stretchable electronics, a 2D film structure was used, comprising a liquid metal-spreading stretchable polymer substrate with a conductive polymer encapsulation. The wrinkled liquid metal platform allowed the conductive polymer encapsulation to match the wrinkles, resulting in stretchable electronics. The design strategies can open up the next-generation flexible/stretchable bioelectronics.
