Engineered Artificial Skin Tissue Models to Recapitulate Oxygen Tension in Atopic Dermatitis

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a common chronic inflammatory skin disease associated with severe itching. AD is still challenging to predict clinically due to complex physiological conditions (e.g., oxygen tension, cytokines release etc.) and multifactorial pathogenesis. Thus, it is necessary to develop preclinical models that can precisely mimic the physiological features of AD. Herein, we develop oxygen-controllable 3D skin models to recapitulate the microenvironments of AD. These 3D tissue models are fabricated by encapsulating human dermal fibroblasts within hydrogels.
