Single-atom catalysts (SACs) with the advantages of maximum atomic utilization efficiency and low cost have great promise to replace expensive commercial Pt/C catalysts in oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). However, reported SACs have severe disadvantages of linear scaling relationships due to their structural simplicity. Because of this limitation, diatomic site catalysts (DACs) are considered as the promising candidates by modulating the electronic structure rationally through the synergistic effect between two metal atoms. Therefore, we design nitrogen-doped carbon modified with Fe-Pd diatomic sites (denoted as Fe,Pd-NC). The resulted Fe,Pd-NC catalyst exhibits the excellent ORR performance with an E1/2 of 0.88 V vs. RHE, better than commercial Pt/C with an E1/2 of 0.85 V vs. RHE in 0.1 M KOH electrolyte. Furthermore, Fe,Pd-NC showed enhanced selectivity and durability compared with commercial Pt/C. These findings will provide a guideline for further design of diatomic site catalysts.
