Volatile organic solvents (VOCs) have a high vapor pressure and low boiling point, which are harmful to the environment and human health. Workers who handle chemicals, such as in plastics and paint manufacturing, are easily exposed to VOCs, which can cause serious health problems. Various detection mechanisms, such as optical, electrical, and gravimetric ones, have been applied to detect VOCs. Here, we present a capacitive VOC gas sensor composed of poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) and conductive textile electrodes. The device is fabricated by sandwiching a layer of PDMS as a dielectric layer between the conductive textiles. The different swelling ratios of the PDMS depending on types of organic solvents is adopted. The textile-based gas sensor shows reliable selectivity for different vaporized organic solvents through changes in PDMS thickness and capacitance values when exposed to the vapors.
