Heterogeneous Nucleation and Growth of Colloidal Crystals on Microdisks for Photonic Pigments

Photonic crystals are commonly generated through the self-assembly of colloidal particles. Depletion attraction provides an attractive force for the assembly of colloidal particles when a specific concentration of non-absorbing polymers is present. By heterogeneously nucleating colloidal particles from added seed particles, it becomes possible to tailor the photonic crystals to desired configurations. In this study, we induce the growth of colloidal crystals on microdisks using depletion attraction. Photocurable acrylate monomers are used to design microdisks. To prevent the sinking of colloidal particles and microdisks, the densities of materials should be carefully matched. To achieve this, the mixture of ETPTA and HDDA is employed as the seed monomer, and the mixture of H2O and D2O is used as the continuous phase. Furthermore, we expect that these resulting photonic particles can be utilized as magneto-responsive color pigments by introducing magnetic particles into the microdisks.
